Who are these qualifications for?

These qualifications are for learners who want to study science through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education courses. Learners will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin study of the applied science sector.

What do these qualifications cover?

Everyone will study the following mandatory units:

  • Principles and Applications of Science I
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Science Investigation Skills
  • Laboratory Techniques and their Application
  • Principles and Applications of Science II
  • Investigative Project
  • Contemporary Issues in Science

How is the qualification assessed?

These qualifications are assessed using a combination of externally-assessed units and internally-assessed units.

Externally-assessed units

  • Examinations – all learners take the same assessment at the same time, normally with a written outcome
  • Set tasks – learners take the assessment during a defined window and demonstrate understanding through completion of a vocational task

Internally-assessed units

Learners could be given opportunities to:

  • Write up the findings of their own research
  • Use case studies to explore complex or unfamiliar siutations
  • Carry out projects for which they have choice over the direction and outcomes
  • Demonstrate practical and technical skills using appropriate equipment, procedures and techniques

How are these graded?

Every unit achieved will be graded as pass, merit or distinction. Qualifications are graded using a Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction* structure.
